Hoping to ease tensions and enhance cross-cultural dialogue, the David Nazarian College of Business and Economics at California State University, Northridge is part of a multi-university, interdisciplinary project — funded with $5 million from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency — to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted app to help with real-time interpretations. Nazarian College Low Income Taxpayer Clinic Volunteer Wins Case Against IRS

It was as normal a Monday morning as any for pro bono practitioner, Steven L. Jager, when he got a notification from the Los Angeles Tax Court Clerk requesting his services. Representing the David Nazarian College of Business and Economics’ Bookstein Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), Jager was placed in a breakout room on Zoom with the petitioner, Ramiro Anthony Jimenez, and two additional pro bono lawyers from other low-income tax clinics to discuss Jimenez’s case. This case would eventually go on to become a win for both Jimenez and Jager. Read more

Nazarian College MST Students Receive 2021 Tax Executive Institute’s Outstanding Achievement Award

Emi Fisher and Orr Klein, Master of Science in Taxation (MST) students at California State University, Northridge’s David Nazarian College of Business and Economics, were recently named co-recipients of the Class of 2021 Tax Executive Institute’s Outstanding Achievement Award and will receive the Tax Executive Institute Scholarship Award.
The Tax Executives Institute awards a scholarship in the amount of $1,500 to a graduating MST student at the Nazarian College who has demonstrated the highest level of mastery of knowledge and has been rated as the top student by faculty in the program. Read more

The impact of COVID-19 over the past year has brought on additional hardship for many low-income taxpayers. With “stay-at-home” orders in place, on-and-off throughout the pandemic, the idea of filing taxes was made more stressful for taxpayers in need of services provided by CSUN’s VITA Clinic.
Wells Fargo (WSF) is trying to relieve that strain by awarding California State University, Northridge $50,000 in launching and expanding the virtual services offered by its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Clinic in CSUN’s David Nazarian College of Business and Economics. Read more

Professor Melanie Stallings Williams co-authored an article, “Masters of the Universe: Bid Rigging By Private Equity Firms in Multibillion Dollar LBOs,” for the University of Cincinnati Law Review that throws the spotlight on a rare class-action lawsuit in which the plaintiffs – shareholders in companies purchased – demonstrated that some of the world’s largest private equity firms unlawfully colluded to ensure that they held down prices on the companies they were bidding to buy.

For nearly 50 years, California State University, Northridge’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Clinic has provided cost-free expert tax assistance for families and individuals with low incomes, leading to such benefits, said Rafi Efrat, Bookstein Chair in Taxation and the director of the VITA Clinic. Efrat received a $344,250 grant from the California Department of Community Services and Development to expand the program to include the CSU 5 VITA Initiative, named for the five California State University campuses — Northridge, Los Angeles, Dominguez Hills, Long Beach and Pomona — taking the lead on the project. Moreno is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting and is graduating in the spring semester of 2019.
