Business faculty publish research showing the value of real-life consulting projects for real estate students

A recent study by faculty of CSUN’s David Nazarian College of Business & Economics shows how to enrich real estate programs by incorporating student consulting projects.

In their paper, “Connecting to the real world: Incorporating student consulting projects in real estate programs” Dr. Ray Calnan, Dr. Deborah Cours and Melanie Williams discuss the significant opportunities for real estate students to develop and apply academic concepts, give meaningful assistance to small businesses, and foster constructive relationships between universities and the larger business community. These projects support the university’s community engagement goals by incorporating service learning opportunities.

In planning the real estate curriculum, the program directors reviewed existing education and real estate industry research, interviewed real estate professionals and experts, and considered skills employers demand.

Additionally, the authors reviewed the research on student-based projects, discuss its application in real estate programs, and provide guidelines for other educational institutions to adapt for their own programs.

The study, published in the Journal of Education for Business, can be found here
