After Mount Rushmore we visited the Crazy Horse Memorial - what can I say? Rushmore is big - Crazy Horse will be gigantic! The Crazy Horse Memorial was begun in the 1940's and work will continue for (God willing and da creek don't rise!) another 40 years.
On the other side you can see a model the sculptor prepared (1/34th scale) of how it is supposed to look eventually.
|
The sculptor was asked by Lakota Sioux chiefs to create a rock sculptore in the are where Mount Rushmore had been made. The sculptor had worked on Mount Rushmore with Borglum and had experience in Rock I am not sure "carving" is the correct term - blasting is more like it. He started the work alone with minimal tools.
He had the foresight to procreate - 10 children. He has been dead for a number of years, but his family is continuing the work under the leadership of his widow. The work is entirely financed through contributions - cash and in kind and visitor fees. As can be seen from the pictures, so far only the head and the arm are completed. The head of the horse is supposed to be completed in a few years. In the visitor center Indian artists and craftspeople are exhibiting their work and are able to earn some money. |
