Black Hills and Mount Rushmore

On the way to Mount Rushmore from Hill City we were fascinated by the beauty of the black hills There really are hills or better mountains - we are again above 5,000 feet - and they are solid with forests, hence black from a distance. Not much sign of bark beetle damage here. Very pretty. We loved this little lake. Even I could have been persuaded to camp here.

Also,as you can see, there are serious b3 rocks here and

if you look carefully - what do you see in the picture below? black1   george

 Mount Rushmore

The Mount Rushmore monument is certainly very  impressive, but I actually really, really like rocks and I  am not so sure how much I like rocks  that have been  "embellished". Obviously a matter of  taste.

Below, Mount Rushmore with unknown civilians

Below the four gentlemen - for you who are a little  weak on  history: from left: George Washington,  Thomas  Jefferson; Teddy Rosevelt and Abraham  Lincoln. For Nick who was worried: All four were  properly barbered.

and finally with another - perhaps known civilian:

Behind the civilian the gateway to the memorial with  the flags of the fifty states. The architecture of the  memorial is rather gargantuan, Albert Speer would be proud. I assume it is to keep it in appropriate scale with the rock.

Having visited Rushmore we had to also go to the Crazy Horse Memorial
