SUN Program

Welcome to our College of Education Self-care Initiative, informally called Self-care for U at Northridge, the SUN Program.

It is so wonderful that you are considering self-care as an important way to care for yourself and keep balance and health in your life. Self-care means taking responsibility for yourself to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and in your personal world through individually determined, proactive activities. You are at your best when you attend to yourself in equal measure to others in day-to-day living!

Self-Care for Politically Charged Times

I recently read an article that reminded me of why it is so important to engage in self-care, especially as we face these challenging times of a pandemic and racism in America. The author Shelley Tygielski of this article entitled, “The Five Rules of Self-care” in the journal Mindful, assets “Being whole and meeting our own emotional and physical needs first is the only way we will build the world we want to see in the future.”  Read more

Ongoing protests due to anti-Black racism in America continue to send a message of anger and pain over the need for change. These protests signal that enough is enough. Another message also is emerging, one of compassion. Compassion for those victims who have repeatedly experienced injustices, compassion for those facing their own implicit biases and privilege and now choosing to speak out for change, compassion for one another as we move through this ugly time together to work toward a better, more just world. Self-Care Week of 6/8/2020

June 8, 2020

In the last week we have experienced a marathon of emotions as we watched the modern day lynching of George Floyd by a public servant who were meant to protect, not harm. COVID-19 has become the magnifying glass to witnessing the ongoing racial injustices and violence against Black people with the endorsement of leaders in America.  As we watch these institutionalized injustices and the resulting protests, our emotions are pouring out-anger, despair, righteous indignation, hopelessness, and most of all, pain. Mindfulness is about being fully present with how we are feeling, no matter what it is. Stephanie Domet and Heather Hurlock further state that mindfulness teaches us how to stop and listen, allows us to work with our own conditionings and implicit biases, and is necessary for the difficult conversations that need to happen right now. Self-Care Week of 6/1/20

June 1, 2020

Sun

Just when we thought things could not get worse, the world turned upside down this week. Self-care can mean many things, but it absolutely means practicing equity, access, inclusion, and social justice for ourselves and championing these rights for everyone else in this world. The mission of the College of Education and the ethical and professional standards of all of our educational programs embrace these values as essential for the well-being of our students and the community that we serve. As faculty and staff, we promote these basic rights for ourselves and others, and encourage our students to do the same as they go forward in their profession. One of the best ways to engage in self-care is engaging in acts that change the world for the better. Let’s change the world together. Please enjoy this inspiring music and a great presentation by Sydney Chaffee, 2017 National Teacher of the Year. Read more
