Self-care on Labor Day

September 7, 2020

Dear COE community,

This year with COVID, Labor Day has taken on even greater significance. We celebrate those on the frontlines doing whatever it takes, no matter the risk to keep our state & country afloat. And as we reflect on the meaning of work in all of our lives, it is important to remember that so many in this country are working less or not at all. Others are working in new and complex modes of virtual communication from home with the “always-on” culture that comes with digital hyper-communication. Since it doesn’t appear that the “always-on” culture will be switching off any time soon, here is an article from the Entrepreneur that offers “ five key strategies that can help safeguard personal life, promote well-being and maintain high productivity levels during this critical time.”

The meaning of work has definitely shifted. The likelihood is that work will never be quite the same as it has been in the past,  even as the job market improves and we return to future in-person job settings when it’s safe. Despite challenges and unknowns, many of us in the College of Education community feel renewed gratitude for still having a job or for continuing on an educational path that will lead to employment as a teacher, counselor, leader, or other position that contributes positively to our world.

One thing is for certain. With the stress of COVID-19 in whatever manner it may have an impact on us, the importance of self-care has never been greater!

And may you continue to take care of yourselves in what ever work situation you are currently in.

Warmly,

Shari and Josh
