Governor Newsom Announces Appointments 9.8.23

Candis Welch, of Long Beach, has been appointed to the State Rehabilitation Council. Welch has been Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coordinator, Internal Programming at the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority since 2022. She was a Contracts and Procurement Analyst at the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority from 2018 to 2022 and a Procurement Coordinator for the Los Angeles County Auditor-Controller from 2014 to 2018. Welch earned a Master of Public Policy and Administration degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from California State University, Northridge. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Welch is a Democrat. -- CA.gov

CSUN denies UNLV’s quest for first road win in two years

The Nevada Las Vegas Rebels’ road win streak comes to an end with a tough loss to California State Northridge Matadors. Despite a resilient performance by their young lineup, a late rally by CSUN sealed the game, leaving the Rebels disappointed. UNLV showcased their potential with a well-executed goal by Kai Merrill and strong attacking play throughout the match. However, defensive lapses and untimely penalties cost them the victory. The Rebels will look to bounce back in their upcoming game against Stetson at home. -- BVM Sports

CSUN Women’s Soccer falls 5-1 to Idaho, Izabel Reyes scores her first career goal

CSUN Women’s Soccer suffered a setback against Idaho, losing 5-1 at Matador Soccer Field. The Vandals took an early lead, scoring within the first 20 seconds of the match. Despite CSUN’s efforts in the second half, including a goal from Izabel Reyes, Idaho maintained their dominance. The Matadors will now face defending national champion UCLA in their next match. -- BVM Sports

Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff coming to Shanksville

As the nation's first second gentleman, married to the first woman vice president, Emhoff was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Matawan, N.J., by his parents, Mike and Barbara, with his siblings, Jamie and Andy. His family moved to the Los Angeles area during his teen years. Emhoff earned a bachelor of arts from California State University, Northridge and a J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. Latina Becomes First Girl to Reach Eagle Scout Rank in Sylmar Boy Scouts Troop

Despite balancing college applications and completing her merit badges, Rios was able to complete her Eagle project, which consisted of building an eco-friendly garden at her local high school, graduate from Saugus High School. In the future Rios hopes to take on a leadership role and inspire more young Latinas to join the BSA. She’s also majoring in biology at California State University Northridge and is passionate about preserving and protecting the environment. -- Hip Latina
