Legendary coach Dennis Erickson stars in a new book about Cougar football, alongside his old childhood friend, Mike Price

When Jack Elway arrived at Cal State Northridge in 1976, he enrolled his young son, John, at Granada Hills High School. John Elway had been a linebacker as a middle schooler in Pullman [while his dad coached at WSU], but his father saw his son's ability to pass and convinced him to try the quarterback position when they moved to California. As Jack Elway was building the Northridge program, his son was learning a wild new offense with Neumeier as his coach at Granada Hills. John Elway turned out to be a perfect fit as a quarterback in Neumeier's system. -- Inlander

Five Major Late-Night Hosts Will Launch Joint Podcast To Support Staff During Writers’ Strike

Late-night television shows—including these hosts’ shows, Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show—were among the first to shut down after the strike began in May. Shortly after, the Screen Actors Guild went on strike, as well, meaning even if late-night television wanted to come back without writers, the shows would likely struggle to book guests as actors are not allowed to promote work they’ve filmed during their strike. The strikes were the results of failed contract negotiations with Hollywood studios after members requested increased compensation, better residuals, staffing requirements and protections from AI job interference, among other demands. The failure to reach an agreement has cost California’s economy an estimated $3 billion as of early August, according to Todd Holmes, a professor at California State University, Northridge. -- Forbes

A Reel-y Good Time

Dave Haws worked at Metropolitan Theatres while still in high school, including during the wintertime film festival, which sparked not only a lifelong love for movies, but also the desire to make a living in the industry. Haws, who was born and raised in Santa Barbara, headed out of town to get an education, majored in cinema arts at Cal State Northridge and remained in the L.A. area to pursue a career in the film industry, mostly in non-glamorous roles. Haws has worked in the camera and lighting departments on movies and other video projects, but also directed shorts, music videos, and commercials. -- Montecito Journal
