SUN Program

Welcome to our College of Education Self-care Initiative, informally called Self-care for U at Northridge, the SUN Program.

It is so wonderful that you are considering self-care as an important way to care for yourself and keep balance and health in your life. Self-care means taking responsibility for yourself to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and in your personal world through individually determined, proactive activities. You are at your best when you attend to yourself in equal measure to others in day-to-day living!

Black History Month and Being Antiracist

This February, we continue to honor Black History month and contemplate antiracism as a critical act of self-care for ourselves and the world we live in. The importance of understanding racism as not only existing on an individual level, but also as broadly imbedded in policies and all aspect of our lives is discussed in an article on Being Antiracist from the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. This week marks the start of Black History Month, a time to appreciate and celebrate our Black community. It also is a time to renew our commitment to equity work, focusing on deeper understanding and action addressing anti-black racism. Equity work involves emotional and physical investment and energy, and while incredibly fulfilling, can also be emotionally taxing and lead to burnout. Self-Care: Living with uncertainty

After nearly two years of pandemic chaos, the omicron variant has thrown a road block in front of what we hoped would finally be post-pandemic life. “Wait and see” is the new mantra. Planning is incredibly difficult, from returning to the new semester to planning personal gatherings and activities. And research shows that all this uncertainty can cause massive stress. “The human brain doesn’t cope well with uncertainty” according to Heidi Grant and Tal Goldhamer in an article in the Harvard Business Review.
