College Basketball's five biggest surprise teams
After going 14-48 over the last two seasons, Northridge hit the New Year with double-digit victories, including a beatdown of Long Beach State in the second game of conference action. The Matadors already have a win over UCLA, and while the Bruins are among this season’s biggest disappointments, that was still a game in which Cal State Northridge closed a 17.5-point underdog. Signature wins are few and far between otherwise, but first-year head coach Andy Newman, who took Cal State San Bernardino to the Division II Final Four last season, has his team taking smart shots and playing good defense. The Matadors haven’t earned their way into the Big Dance since 2009, which, coincidentally, was the last time they had a winning season at 16-14. -- VSiN
