Jazz Studies

The CSUN Jazz Studies program is committed to progressive education, inclusive mentorship, and creating life-changing opportunities for our students. We provide a welcoming, communal environment for students to explore their creativity, in balance with learning fundamental jazz tradition and practical professional skills. Diverse, internationally recognized faculty guide students in their artistic and professional development throughout their time at CSUN and beyond. Our program offers BM and MM degrees in Jazz Studies, as well as jazz emphasis options for BA Music Industry Studies, Music Therapy, and Music Education options.

The program offers an innovative curriculum focused on all areas of jazz including Improvisation, Jazz History, Jazz Pedagogy, Big Bands, Combos, Arranging, Vocal Jazz, Latin Jazz, Ne Veux Ensemble and additional related courses in jazz, music industry and composition.

Opportunities to travel, record, compose, and engage with critically acclaimed professional musicians in a variety of ensemble settings are available to our students every semester.
