Music Scholarships

The list below contains music scholarship that our department offers. Once we receive your application and you are accepted, the individual areas on scholarship committee determine which scholarship each student is eligible for and they award the scholarships based on that information.

Arts Council Music Scholarship

Criteria: For a music student.

Colburn Foundation Classical Music Scholarship

Criteria: To be awarded to continuing or incoming students of classical music in Performance, Voice, Conducting or Composition.

Deans Recognition - Freshman

Deans Recognition - Junior

Deans Recognition - Graduate

Dr. Robert W. Wienpahl Scholarship

Criteria: To be awarded based on scholastic merit, personal potential and community service with  financial need as a secondary consideration.

Criteria: For a music student.

Criteria: General Music Department scholarship.

Myron Sandler Ovation Award

Criteria: Recipients must display a passion for music performance and/or education and be enrolled in Strings, Winds, Percussion, Classical Guitar or Music Education option. Financial need, merit (3.0 minimum GPA), promise and other criteria may be taken into consideration.

Richard Wiegand '66 Scholarship in Music

Criteria: General music scholarship for music majors that are continuing students and have demonstrated a strong interest in classical music.

Ruth Bjorkman Memorial Scholarship

Samuel John Swartz Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: The award amount should be equal to the interest and may be awarded annually or per semester to a student majoring in music. Award at the discretion of the committee.

Stradivarius Scholarship 

Etude Music Club Scholarship

Criteria: The award should rotate between Voice, Piano, Strings, and Woodwinds areas to an advanced student.

Benny Golbin Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: For Jazz and Woodwinds students. This scholarship honors Benny Golbin, a former student at CSUN who studied both jazz and classical music. The scholarship will be awarded to Jazz Studies and Wind Studies students, alternating each year. Primarily for Freshmen students, but renewability will be considered. Recipient must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and demonstrate financial need. Applicants will submit a personal essay illustrating how this scholarship would assist them with their future goals. For years when scholarship is awarded to Jazz Studies students: Evidence of exceptional interest in jazz performance through involvement in extracurricular and independent jazz projects (founding of an independent ensemble, original composition, etc.,) and participation in school jazz programs, festivals, etc.

Aurelio de la Vega Art Music Composition Scholarship

Criteria: For composition student

Leda Campo Scholarship

Andres Segovia Scholarship

Criteria: Guitar students.

Andy Summers Guitar Scholarship

Criteria:  To qualify for this award, the recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the classical guitar performance program in the Music Department of the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Communication. The student must demonstrate artistic ability through audition, and have a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

Eleanor Baxter and Dorothy Fabricant Scholarship in Music

Criteria: For a continuing music student.

Randy Rhoads Endowed Memorial Scholarship 

Criteria: Must have minimum 3.0 GPA. Students meeting criteria shall audition for Guitar Area faculty and members of the Rhoads family, who shall be invited to participate in all auditions. Preference given to talented student(s) with greatest financial need.

Ronald C. and Elizabeth-Ann Purcell Memorial Guitar Scholarship

Criteria: $1,000 minimum scholarships for juniors, seniors and graduate students in Guitar program with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Selected by Guitar faculty and approved by Chair.

Rose Augustine Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Awarded to a very talented incoming freshman to be determined by the Guitar area.

Chuck Anderson Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Endowment supports minimum $500 annual scholarships to talented students in Music with preference given to student musicians who wish to pursue a career in Jazz performance.

Chuck Niles Scholarship in Jazz

Criteria: From a press release: To be awarded to one upper division student who shows an interest in a broadcasting career with an emphasis in jazz.

Herb Alpert Foundation Scholarships

Criteria: Entering or continuing students in Jazz.

Jazz Scholarship Endowment

Sandy and Ron Zacky Jazz Endowment

Criteria: Scholarships to support promising jazz students.

Igor Paltsev, '10 Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Merit-based award for outstanding freshmen, sophomores or juniors with minimum 3.0 GPA overall. Must be enrolled full-time in Commercial and Media Composition option. Preference given to students who demonstrate strong potential as a composer and whose portfolios include two to three recent compositions. Recipients selected by head of Commercial and Media Composition option, subject to approval by Chair and Dean.

Ella Fitzgerald Memorial Scholarship in Music Education

Criteria: For Music Education students transferring to or entering their junior or senior year. Minimum 2.5 GPA, must qualify for financial aid with preference to students working or volunteering part-time with under-served populations. Can be renewed for up to three years. Funds can be used for tuition, fees, books, music. Foundation may consider additional support such as buying the Ella Fitzgerald Memorial Scholar a parking permit or new laptop computer, if the need is there. Specific mentoring agreement is required by foundation.

Mildred Ryan McGowan Memorial Scholarship

Mary Louise Reilly Music Education Scholarship

Criteria: A $1,000 scholarship to be given to a Music Education junior or senior who has applied to the credentialing program at CSUN and has a 3.0+ GPA. For this merit-based scholarship, the donor desires that the recipient: intend to enter a teacher certification program; demonstrate strong performance as a musician; show academic excellence in music programs; submit a one-page essay about the importance of music education.

Carson Schreiber Music Industry Studies Merit Scholarship

Criteria: For Music majors, with preference given to students majoring in Music Industry. The recipients will be second- or third-year students with minimum 3.0 GPA, meeting University's financial need requirements and who are selected by the Department of Music and approved by the Dean. Scholarship amount is at the discretion of the Chair, but donor prefers a larger award to have greater impact. Unused funds to be rolled over to next year. If bequest is less than anticipated, the MIS endowment is the priority.

Criteria: Awarded to promising student pursuing a career in Music Industry

Norman J. Borczon Memorial Scholarship

Dr. Sandra Aguado-Bostrom Music Therapy Scholarship

Criteria: For a music therapy student who will be entering an internship and has shown outstanding promise.

The Don and Sandra Bostrom Scholarship

Criteria: For an outstanding student continuing in music therapy studies.

Lola Aguado-Sadlo Scholarship

Marilyn N. Hankins Scholarship

Criteria: For a continuing music therapy student who shows outstanding promise.

Remo Belli Memorial Scholarship

Karen Ervin Memorial Percussion Scholarship

Criteria: Scholarships for B.M. or B.A. music students who are qualified percussionists, but eligibility is not limited to percussion performance majors. Recipients must have a 2.75 GPA or higher and meet the University's financial aid criteria.

Charles Fierro Piano Scholarship

Dr. Frank McGinnis Memorial Piano Scholarship

Criteria: incoming freshmen or transfers. Can be used for graduate students as well.

Esther Roth Memorial Music Scholarship

Criteria: Restricted to performance music scholarships, with preference given to piano students.

Criteria: For a piano performance major.

Joan Thompson Piano Scholarship

Criteria: For deserving violin students.

J. William and Robert V. Howard Memorial Scholarship in Violin

Manuel Compinsky Endowment

Criteria: Awarded to a violinist or strings major showing excellent promise as a musician.

Marie Louise Meylan Calvert Scholarship

Criteria: For Strings area

Samuel Goldberg Honors String Quartet Scholarship

Criteria: To be awarded exclusively to student players in the quartet, at the discretion of the Director of the Samuel Goldberg Honors String Quartet.

Buelah Allen Voice Scholarship

Criteria: Granted to a Voice major. Preference is given to a continuing student, although the scholarship may be given to incoming students, as well. Endowment agreement did not establish scholarship amount, and it may be made annually or each semester.

CSUN Vocal Arts Scholarship

Criteria: Applicants must meet minimum criteria listed below. If no such applicant applies, then no scholarship shall be awarded that year. Must be a vocal performance major. Must have completed 60 academic credits to qualify for Junior level class standing, or higher. Must submit a short (1-page, type written) essay describing the student’s plan to pursue a solo vocal performing career that identifies realistic next steps. May represent opera, musical theatre, religious/cantorial or comparable solo performance areas.

Criteria: Awarded within the Voice program to a talented singer.

Nancy Hooker Memorial Award
Criteria: Scholarship in voice requiring an audition.

Opera Guild of So. California
Criteria: applicants must meet following criteria: Must be a Vocal Arts performance major at MCCAMC. Must be of Junior level status or higher. Demonstrates significant vocal promise. Must complete a live vocal audition for faculty from Vocal Arts area. Must have a 3.0 g.p.a. Preference given to students demonstrating financial need.

Rachel Ketchie Memorial Scholarship
Criteria: Awarded to a student in Voice who shows exceptional promise.

Robert Barbera Scholarship in Voice
Criteria: To provide support for upper-division voice students who have demonstrated outstanding talent and a commitment to a future career in voice performance. Selected by a committee of Voice faculty.

Steven M. Williams Memorial Scholarship
Criteria: Awarded to an entering or continuing Voice major, with preference for a tenor.

B.J. Pedrotti Scholarship
