SUN Program

Welcome to our College of Education Self-care Initiative, informally called Self-care for U at Northridge, the SUN Program.

It is so wonderful that you are considering self-care as an important way to care for yourself and keep balance and health in your life. Self-care means taking responsibility for yourself to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and in your personal world through individually determined, proactive activities. You are at your best when you attend to yourself in equal measure to others in day-to-day living!

Self-care and fall celebrations

This week, many of us enjoy celebrating various fall festivals. Many families celebrate Halloween, which dates back to 1745, and means "Saints' evening". It comes from a Scottish term for All Hallows' Eve (the evening before All Hallows' Day) “an antidote to fear.” Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, donning costumes and eating treats. Many families also recognize another holiday this week, Dia de los Muertos, celebrated on All Saints Day and All Souls Day, November 1st and 2nd. Read more

Self-care and resilience

Our world seems to be in a state of constant chaos with stressors coming from all directions- war, global warming, racism, hateful politics and racism, inadequate resources, heavy workload. So how do we carry on? According to a recent American Psychologist blog titled Building Your Resilience, we all experience trauma and other stressors. However, through resilience, we can strengthen our ability to handle challenges and maybe even become stronger as a result. Resilience is defined as “the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress.” Read more

Self-care and Racial Battle Fatigue

A concept critical to all DEI and social justice work is the understanding of how Racial Battle Fatigue impacts wellbeing for those in our community who are experiencing racism. Dr. William A. Smith, Executive Administrator at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute at the University of Utah, developed the concept of Racial Battle Fatigue, which is the cumulative emotional, psychological, physiological, and behavioral effects of everyday forms of racism.
