SUN Program

Welcome to our College of Education Self-care Initiative, informally called Self-care for U at Northridge, the SUN Program.

It is so wonderful that you are considering self-care as an important way to care for yourself and keep balance and health in your life. Self-care means taking responsibility for yourself to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and in your personal world through individually determined, proactive activities. You are at your best when you attend to yourself in equal measure to others in day-to-day living!

Self-care and signs of COVID-related trauma

The pandemic has had a significant impact on many of us, but what exactly are signs of how the last 20 months have affected us? According to Jennifer King, an assistant professor and the co-director of the Center on Trauma and Adversity at Case Western Reserve University, “Evidence suggests that the pandemic — and all the fear, stress, isolation and grief it has caused — has been one major traumatic stressor that’s causing all kinds of PTSD-like symptoms. Research from Case Western Reserve University found that 85% of participants were experiencing at least one symptom of post-traumatic stress in 2020 and early 2021.”  Read more

Self-care and recognizing veterans and their caregivers

“This Veterans Day, it is important not just to honor a veteran’s service but also take time to appreciate who they are today and the caregivers who walk beside them,” says Cathy Dietrich, who cares for her father, an 87-year-old Air Force veteran. Cathy is a member of the Red Cross Military Veteran Caregiver Network (MVCN), a network that offers support and resources, such as medication management, health care coordination and emotional support, to veterans. “Caregivers give so much of themselves,” states MVCN Director Melissa Comeau. “This role can impose a substantial physical, emotional and financial toll on them. Connecting caregivers with each other and resources is at the heart of what we do.” Read more

Self-care and recognizing trauma

Trauma due to the pandemic may likely cause a widespread mental health challenge. When felt on the community level, people may question the future as a whole. The first step to addressing trauma is recognizing the existence of trauma, according to psychiatrist Dr. Julian Lagoy. “The current COVID-19 pandemic has qualities that qualify as a traumatic experience, like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as it takes a physical and emotional toll on many people.” According to Lagoy, one of the indicators of STSD trauma “is seeing the world as a dangerous place.
