SUN Program

Welcome to our College of Education Self-care Initiative, informally called Self-care for U at Northridge, the SUN Program.

It is so wonderful that you are considering self-care as an important way to care for yourself and keep balance and health in your life. Self-care means taking responsibility for yourself to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and in your personal world through individually determined, proactive activities. You are at your best when you attend to yourself in equal measure to others in day-to-day living!

This week we celebrate May Day and our gorgeous natural world. This is a great time to take a moment to just stop what we are doing, thinking, being distracted by, and gaze at the wonder of nature around us. Nature is one of the best sources of self-care. A blog in Psychology Today titled, “Nurtured by nature”, states, “Psychological research is advancing our understanding of how time in nature can improve our mental health and sharpen our cognition.” So give this deep drink of nature’s beauty to yourself this May Day and every day. Self-care, well-being, and social change

As we engage in social justice and transformative activities to create a more just society, we also need to be aware of the impact this can have on our wellbeing. When we “work at the center of social problems, often in chronically under-resourced or highly stressful environments that don’t allow for self-reflection or self-care….we can experience problems such as burnout, serious health issues, and breakdowns in relationships,” according to the Stanford Social Innovation Review. “While addressing these personal challenges is important in and of itself, there is also growing evidence that personal well-being lies at the heart of effectively addressing systemic social challenges. There is also growing interest in how individuals, funders, and organizations can support greater well-being in themselves and across the field.” Read more

Self-care and feeling cared for

Our work, especially at this time of the academic year, in often challenging, demanding, and stressful. That is why feeling cared for is especially important for our wellbeing right now. “Studies show that feeling cared about buffers against stress, increases positive emotions, promotes resilience, and increases caring for others,” according to a 2020 article in Psychology Today.
