Intramural Sports Eligibility and Guidelines
Eligibility
All California State University, Northridge students, faculty and staff are eligible to compete in intramural (IM) activities. The league or division in which an individual may participate is determined by the participant’s self-identified gender.
All participants are required to sign the Student Recreation Center (SRC) waiver and pay the IM pass fee before competing in any intramural event (both indoor and outdoor sports). All intramural participants are responsible for their own access into the playing area. All IM participants must have an active SRC membership. Students are automatically members of the SRC. CSUN faculty and staff members that do not have an active SRC membership must purchase an SRC guest pass and be hosted by an active member each time they choose to play. The IM pass fee for students is $11 and $15 for faculty and staff for the entire semester.
Eligibility for Greek Participants
General Guidelines
-
All participants are required to purchase an Intramural (IM) Pass at the Student Recreation Center (SRC) before they play their first game. The cost is $11 for students or $15 for faculty and staff.
-
Each participant must bring their CSUN ID, MataCard or a government-issued photo ID and their receipt of an Intramural Pass to every game to participate.
-
Participants who want to play in a day’s game must have their name on the printed roster that comes from the Intramural Office through IMLeagues.com.
-
To add a player to a team’s roster, the player must be added and approved by the team’s captain on IMLeagues.com by noon on the day of the game.
-
Team representatives, including players, spectators, team managers and coaches are all subject to the SRC intramural rules and regulations.
Greek Specific Guidelines
-
All members of a Greek organization are eligible to participate in the respective CSUN intramural fraternity or sorority sports offerings.
-
Pledges may participate in the fraternity/sorority league for the Greek organization that they want to join. All other players need to be an active member of the organization to play in a Greek league. Inactive members who are still enrolled or faculty/staff members at CSUN are welcome to play in all other non-Greek leagues.
-
If a fraternity or sorority protests to the Intramural Office that another team has misrepresented a player’s connection to the Greek organization in question, the Intramural Office will review the active roster with the Greek Life Coordinator to determine the eligibility of the disputed player.
-
If the player is not an active member/pledge of that Greek organization, the game in question will be forfeited by the team who used that player. A review will be conducted of the previous game scoresheets. If the ineligible player is signed in on those scoresheets, those games will also be subject to forfeiture.
-
-
It is the duty of a fraternity or sorority to reach out to the Intramural Office with two weeks’ notice if they have events that will impact their participation in a game.

Event Sign-in/Team Rosters
-
All participants should arrive at the playing field/court at least 10–15 minutes prior to their scheduled game time. Participants should check in with the on-site intramural supervisor or assistant, who will then direct them to their designated field/court.
-
The scorecard for games will be available at the intramural staff table. Before each game, all participants must be completely signed in on the game’s scorecard and in proper attire. With the exception of dodgeball, softball and volleyball, intramural sports require pocketless shorts.
-
Participants must have a CSUN ID, MataCard or government-issued photo ID to check in and play each game. The photo on any form of identification must be clear and match the appearance of the participant presenting the ID. No ID, no play, no exceptions.
-
Team rosters are frozen on the last day of the regular season play for each sport and no players can be added for post-season play. To be eligible to participate in the postseason, a player must match one of the two following qualifications:
-
Be a member of the original submitted roster.
-
Have played at least one game during the regular season.
-
-
If a player does not meet one of the two qualifications, they will not be allowed to play during playoffs. A player cannot be added to a playoff team roster from another team’s roster within the same league.
Activities Schedule
Intramural activities will include, but are not limited to, flag football, ultimate frisbee, soccer, softball, basketball, volleyball and dodgeball.
Captain’s Meeting
Attendance at the preseason captain’s meeting is mandatory. A representative from each team must be present to receive information about intramural guidelines and rules specific to the sport that they will be playing. This is an opportunity for team captains to ask questions of the intramural staff and connect with free agents that are looking to join a team.
Failure to attend a preseason captain’s meeting without notice may result in the team being removed from the league and being replaced by a waitlisted team or losing a sportsmanship point in their first game.
Locations
Intramural activities take place both within and outside the Student Recreation Center. Indoor activities such as basketball, volleyball and floor hockey take place at the SRC in either the Red Ring Courts or the MatArena. Outdoor activities such as flag football, ultimate frisbee and soccer will take place at the SRC Turf Field. Activities that use a pool will occur at the SRC Rec Pool.
Sportsmanship Rating System
Good sportsmanship is vital to the conduct of each intramural sport. All participants and spectators are expected to always behave in a mature, sportsmanlike manner. A team is responsible for the actions of all members and spectators associated with the team before, during and after the contest.
Unsportsmanlike conduct is improper behavior including, but not limited to, verbal abuse, physical abuse, obscene gestures/actions, vulgar language, fighting and/or striking an official, supervisor or opponent, and other acts of poor sportsmanship. Actions that are dangerous or detrimental to the enjoyment and safety of other participants will not be tolerated and are grounds for suspension from further intramural participation.
Officials and/or supervisors will assess sportsmanship with a rating system after a team game is played. The rating system is based on a five-point scale. To remain in competition, an average of three points must be maintained and is necessary to advance to post-season play. If a team receives three points or lower, an explanation will be included on the game sheet or supervisor report. Ratings lower than two will result in a meeting between the team captain and the intramural coordinator/assistant before play can be continued.
All teams must maintain a minimum three-point average during playoffs. If a team receives a rating lower than three, the opposing team will advance to the next round.
Sportsmanship ratings are based on the following guidelines:
- 0 — Unacceptable Sportsmanship: Fighting, bullying or making contact with any Intramural Sports staff; intentionally throwing a ball at an Intramural Sports staff and/or participant; refusing to follow the directions of the officials.
- 1 — Unsatisfactory Sportsmanship: Abusive, intimidating and/or threatening behavior towards Intramural Sports staff and/or participants; lack of respect toward officials and opponents; refusing to shake hands before or after games; more than one teammate ejected from the same game; fans associated with a team displaying unsatisfactory sportsmanship.
- 2 — Below Average Sportsmanship: Constantly arguing with Intramural Sports staff and/or participants; aggressive play or foul language; one teammate ejected from the same game; leaving excessive trash near benches.
- 3 — Acceptable Sportsmanship
- 4 — Above Average Sportsmanship: Congeniality between players, opponents and officials.
- 5 — Outstanding Sportsmanship: Respect and civility shown toward opponents, officials, supervisors and teammates before, during and after the competition.
Individual sportsmanship will also be monitored by the intramural game staff. Any participant displaying unsportsmanlike conduct will be issued either a conduct warning or ejected by the intramural officials or intramural supervisors. These conduct warnings or ejections are classified differently in each sport. The following are examples:
- Soccer
- One conduct yellow card — Conduct Warning
- Two conduct yellow cards or one red card — Ejection
- Basketball
- One technical foul — Conduct Warning
- Two technical fouls or one flagrant foul — Ejection
- Flag Football
- One unsportsmanlike conduct penalty — Conduct Warning
- Two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties — Ejection
The Intramural Sports program reserves the right to apply any suspension deemed appropriate for each incident that occurs.
Player Ejection
If a player is ejected from an intramural contest, they will be suspended from at least one game within that same league.
If a player is ejected for abusive language, flagrant foul, unsportsmanlike conduct, etc., the player must:
-
Schedule a meeting with the intramural coordinator prior to their next game.
-
Be suspended from at least one intramural game.
-
Depending on the severity of the offense, they may be subjected to additional punishment.
Alcohol, Drugs and Tobacco
No alcohol, drug or tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, are allowed in university buildings or at intramural venues before, during, or after intramural sports competition. The intramural staff reserves the right to restrict play or eject anyone suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Intramural spectators are also obligated to abide by these rules and the intramural staff reserves the right to remove these individuals from the sidelines.
Inclement Weather
Games may be canceled by the on-site supervisor if inclement weather occurs during play. A member of the Intramural Sports staff may contact the team captain or a representative to announce game cancellations or postponements. Intramural supervisors will follow the "30/30 Rule" when lightning is visible. The 30/30 Rule states that people should seek shelter if the "Flash-To-Bang" delay (length of time in seconds between a lightning flash and its subsequent thunder) is 30 seconds or less, and that they remain under cover until 30 minutes after the final clap of thunder. After 30 minutes pass without any signs of lightning, play may be resumed if time allows.
