BACA: Art, Collaboration & Mural Making Catalog
by Mario Ontiveros
(January 2017, 240 pages)
For the first time in one volume, scholars from across the United States write about Judith F. Baca and The Great Wall of Los Angeles—a renowned half-mile long mural spearheaded by Baca and executed by more than four hundred artists and artists-in-the-making. Edited by Mario Ontiveros, the catalog includes essays by Anna Indych-López, Andrea Lepage, Amalia Mesa-Bains, and Carlos Rogel with a foreword by Judith F. Baca which explore the “why” of the world’s longest mural and the “how” of its creation.
BACA: Art, Collaboration, and Mural Making is a companion publication to CSUN Art Galleries’ exhibition, The Great Wall of Los Angeles: Judith F. Baca’s Experimentations in Collaboration and Concrete, curated by Mario Ontiveros in Fall 2017. The exhibition and catalog were a part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative.

Valley Vista: Art in the San Fernando Valley, CA, 1970-1990 Catalog
by Damon Willick
(September 2014, 143 pages)
Whether regaled as “America’s Suburb” or ridiculed as the capital of mini-malls and Valley Girls, the San Fernando Valley is one of Los Angeles’s most misunderstood and stereotyped regions. The Fall 2014 exhibition and this accompanying catalog seeks to remedy this oversight by examining the unique contribution of the Valley to the city’s art history for the first time. Both exhibition and catalog move beyond the stereotypes and offer an alternative narrative documenting the region’s unrecognized yet unique and substantial role in LA’s emergence as a center of contemporary art activity. The exhibition catalog is written by Damon Willick, exhibition curator, with contributions from Mike Mandel, Robert Pavlik, Mark Van Proyen, Jeffrey Vallance, and Benjamin Weissman.
