Themed Living Community (TLC)
California State University, Northridge offers several themed living communities (TLCs) from which to choose. In the TLCs, participants are not drawn from a specific recognized major but rather are students who unite around a special theme. Each community presents its own scheduled events, academic support and social activities. Each TLC features a resident advisor, who is a member of the community, and a steering committee drawing from students, faculty, Student Housing staff and other campus staff. In this highly collaborative structure, students drive their communities, set priorities, plan activities and identify opportunities to improve their academic and personal growth.
Research shows that students who participate in TLCs are more academically successful and adjust better to college life. If you are interested in residing in one of the TLCs below, you can apply during your housing application.
The Cross-Cultural Themed Living Community is designed for students of all majors who desire to participate in meaningful, intentional, and brave discussions, programs, and events about social change. CSUN has a history of robust cross-cultural education, and this community is designed to celebrate the work of our dynamic academic departments: Chicana/Chicano Studies, Africana Studies, Queer Studies, Asian American Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, Central American Studies, American Indian Studies, Jewish Studies and Middle Eastern Islamic Studies. You do not need to be a major or minor in these departments to be a part of the Cross-Cultural TLC. The Cross-Cultural TLC is more than a CSUN Housing Experience, it is a community of matadors engaged in creating a culture of social change. Cross-Cultural TLC leaders are encouraged to get involved in Student Housing, CSUN and their greater communities.
For questions or more information regarding the Cross-Cultural TLC, please contact Student Housing at (818) 677-2587 or the Student Coordinator for Learning Communities at llc.tlc@csun.edu or (818) 677-6532
Sophomore and Transfer Student Experience: The Sophomore and Transfer Student Experience Themed Living Community brings together students who are in their second year of college, or who have transferred to CSUN from another college. This community is a supportive and fun environment where you will find others who are in your experience. Being in your second year of college can often be a difficult one for many students. Before, there was a great deal of support and guidance for you and you probably had some less difficult classes. In the second year, you may feel out of the loop, and this can leave you feeling like you should have it all figured out. Classes also become more challenging in the second year and beyond.
As a new transfer student, you may experience similar challenges. You are not brand new to college, but you are certainly brand new to CSUN. You know what it takes to be successful in college, but you may not have friends here yet, and you don't necessarily know all the resources available at CSUN. This community puts these two populations together to create community and support. Visit the TLC website for additional information.
Throughout the year, you will have the opportunity to participate in community service, internship and social activities designed to let you explore your relationships with the people around you.
Requirements for participation
- Complete an application and contract for campus housing for the upcoming academic year.
- Be a second year college student or a new transfer student.
