Jorge Solorzano named Big West Freshman of the Year

CSUN Men’s Soccer team’s Jorge Solorzano was named Big West Freshman of the Year, with Jamar Ricketts receiving All-Big West First Team accolades. Solorzano finished seventh in goals scored and eighth in points in the Big West, while Ricketts led the team with eight goals and five assists. Bryan Bustamante and Michael Arrington also received Honorable Mentions. Solorzano is the fifth Matador in team history to win the Freshman of the Year award. Ricketts was praised for his shot accuracy, ranking third in Division I soccer. -- BVM Sports

CSUN Men’s Basketball coach Andy Newman prioritizes recruiting local student-athletes

CSUN men’s basketball coach Andy Newman is prioritizing recruiting local talent, and his first recruiting class with the Matadors features several athletes from the Southern California area. Among them is point guard Gianni Hunt, who returns to his home roots after playing at two Division I schools. Jared Barnett and Jordan Brinson, former Westchester High School alums, have also joined the team. The transfers and incoming freshman provide a quick pace and added dimension on the court for CSUN. Newman hopes to build a program that attracts local talent in the future. -- BVM Sports
