Geophysics students, Jenna Fleck et. al. (2018), publish in Nature Communications

(February 9, 2018) The recent publication Fleck et al., 2018 titled “Iron core diapirs entrain silicates and initiate thermochemical plumes” was published in Nature Communications in January 2018. The authors include 4 CSUN Master's students and 4 undergraduate students in geophysics advised by Dr. Dayanthie Weeraratne. The publication shows new results from laboratory geophysical fluid experiments in the Department of Geological Sciences at CSUN using liquid metal gallium and glucose solutions to study formation of the Earth's core. They find that emulsified iron diapirs formed during the Earth's accretionary processes entrains silicate magma material, volatiles, O and H to the core.

Later, this material forms buoyant thermochemical plumes which rise from the core-mantle boundary to the surface and may release O and H into the mantle and atmosphere when gravity is sufficient to maintain it. This suggests a link between mantle processes and the Earth's oxygen atmosphere. Thermochemical upwellings from the CMB are predicted to persist from 0.5 to 5 By which should demonstrate a primordial signature consistent with large low shear velocity provinces observed in seismic tomography studies in the lower mantle today.
