CSUN Nursing Celebrates 20 Years

In May 2015, the Nursing Department celebrated its 20th anniversary.  Sylvia A. Alva, Dean of the College of Health and Human Development said, “Throughout the program’s history, its faculty and staff have reached for and consistently achieved regional and national standards of excellence.” Dean Alva talked about the vision of the nursing faculty twenty years ago, and their ability to see the need to prepare more nurses in what was then, and continues to be, a rapidly growing and sprawling region.  Read more

Exploring Tourism as a Global Phenomenon

Mechelle Best (Faculty, Recreation and Tourism Management) has co-authored a comprehensive text on the Caribbean tourism economy. “Contemporary Caribbean Tourism: Concepts and Cases” explores tourism as a global phenomenon. Born in Barbados, Best said the Caribbean is the most tourism-dependent region in the world and yet, for most of the Caribbean, the tourism industry has often been a place of last resort for people who cannot find other jobs. Best interviewed educators to find out if and how secondary schools were preparing students to work as professionals in the industry. Read more

Health Sciences Students Visit State Capitol

Thanks to a grant from the California Endowment, for the third year in a row students from the Department of Health Sciences traveled to Sacramento to attend a two-day Health Policy conference, meet with officials and observe hearings in the assembly and the senate. Read more
