If you are interested in applying for a Curriculum Practical Training (CPT), you are asked to review important CPT information at the CSUN International Students page by clicking here. It is in your best interest to attend a CPT Webinar where many of your questions will be answered. Please contact the IESC to get details about the CPT Webinars that they may be conducting.

Please note: In order to apply for CPT, make sure to be in your program for one academic year (2 semesters) prior to applying for CPT. Thus, no MSEM student is eligible for CPT in their first semester.

The student should also have a full course load, which is 12 units for Undergrad and 8 units for Graduate students (unless a reduced load is approved). For more information on CPT eligibility, please refer to the eligibility section on this page

The process for requesting and obtaining CPT permission is as follows:

Step 1: Once you get an internship offer and confirm that you are eligible to apply for CPT, please contact the MSEM department at msem@csun.edu and send them a copy of your offer letter AND a filled-out copy of the CPT request form which can be found here

Please note that the offer letter should have details listed below. A sample CPT internship training offer letter can be found here.

  • Company name, address, and name and contact info. of supervisor
  • Description of responsibilities related to the student’s field of study/job duties
  • Number of internship/training hours per week
  • Start date and End date in mm/dd/year format
  • Hiring manager’s name and signature

Step 2: The department chair will review your documents sent in Step 1 and if they are in order, you will need to enroll in the MSE 494A course, as part of your internship. In order to enroll into the MSE 494A course, please email the MSEM department at msem@csun.edu to obtain a permission number.

Step 3: Once you are enrolled in the MSE 494A course, the department chair will approve the CPT paperwork and send it to IESC. Please allow 5 working days for this to be processed.

Please note: In order to approve the CPT request, the department chair will verify the field in which the internship is to make sure it relates to your major, the number of hours/week of the internship, and the physical location of the internship (if you still are attending classes at CSUN).

Step 3: Once the paperwork is sent to IESC they will approve the CPT application. Please allow approximately 3 weeks for the IESC approval and plan the start date of your internship accordingly.

If you have any questions, please contact the MSEM Department at msem@csun.edu.

To request transfer your course credits you have taken in another institution, you must first be accepted into one of our graduate programs. The course credit transfer process typically occurs one semester after a student has enrolled at CSUN. You will need to request your previous institution to send your official transcripts to CSUN for verification, confirming that these courses are eligible for transfer into our graduate program.

Transfer of course credit is subject to the approval of the graduate coordinator of the MSEM department and the Associate Vice President of Graduate Studies.

Only graduate coursework with a grade of “B” or better may be transferred (CR/NC grading is not transferable).

The MSEM department policy limits no more than 6 semester units can be transferred from another institution toward a graduate degree.

Both transfer and CSUN coursework may not exceed the 7-year time limit.

Units transferred in from a quarter institution will hold a lesser value (i.e., 4 quarter units= 2.67 semester units).

If the course(s) petitioned have been taken at an institution where the degree has been granted, the student must provide a memo from the institution indicating the course(s) was not used for degree completion.
