Welcome to our College of Education Self-care Initiative, informally called Self-care for U at Northridge, the SUN Program.

It is so wonderful that you are considering self-care as an important way to care for yourself and keep balance and health in your life. Self-care means taking responsibility for yourself to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and in your personal world through individually determined, proactive activities. You are at your best when you attend to yourself in equal measure to others in day-to-day living!

Self-care and Black History Month

January 30, 2023

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate African American history and culture, and also  a time to renew our commitment to our own self-care as we engage in antiracist work.  “When we listen to our bodies, hearts, and minds, and consider input from trusted friends, we can find resiliency and renew our lives and work, “ as stated on the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture website. “We each bring our own beliefs, experiences, and feelings to our anti-racist work – a work that is difficult and demanding. Our ongoing commitment to actively think about and take action against racism, combined with a sense of urgency and deep caring, adds pressure and stress to our daily lives. The emotional impact of this work is real, therefore it is vital that we all practice ‘self-care’ to benefit our overall health and quality of life.” Read more

This week we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and embrace his message of racial and social justice. “For many, this holiday is spent as a day of reflection and service, honoring King’s anti-racist, non-violent work in a time of an unprecedented social reckoning and increased violence across the nation,” as stated at the University of Wisconsin, Madison Healthy Minds Innovations (HMI) Center website. The vision of this center rings true for all. That is, “to reflect the truly diverse nature of the world in a space that has often discounted the contributions and different perspectives of the BIPOC community. Well-Being is needed for all – and our vision of a kinder, wiser, more compassionate world goes hand in hand with anti-racist work.” Read more

Self-care and new year resolutions vs. intentions

January 9, 2023

The University Library

As we say good bye to the holidays, many of us are thinking about new year resolutions for 2023. But here is a different way to think about what we wish for in the new year…intentions rather than resolutions. “I am making intentions instead, but more than that, I’m setting them in a framework that will give them wings,” states Dorothy Chin in a Psychology Today blog.
