How the Pandemic Saved L.A.’s Best Alt-Rock Radio Station

But KCSN, recently rebranded “the SoCal Sound” because of its Orange County reach, is riding a wave of record-high ratings and revenue. “If you said three years ago we’d be in the position we’re in now, I would tell you you were crazy,” says program director Marc “Mookie” Kaczor. -- Los Angeles Magazine

L.A. Unified's bilingual program for deaf students hailed as a model for California schools

“It’s important, it’s landmark, it’s critical, because until now, too many deaf students have been denied language equity and education,” said Rachel Friedman Narr, professor of deaf education at Cal State Northridge. “This is going to be revolutionary for deaf students. … The hope is that this will be a model for districts across the state.” -- EdSource

‘Yo Quiero Taco Bell’ Still Divides Opinion 25 Years Later, and the Story Behind It Is Juicy

Another senior from Cal State Northridge named Miguel Paredes noted that “Yo quiero Taco Bell” was not the first offensive campaign by the popular restaurant. “People, particularly Chicanos, find this advertisement offensive because Taco Bell has a history of commercials that were insensitive to the struggle of Mexicans in the United States,” he said. “The previous emblem with the Mexican with the sombrero taking a nap and the ‘Run For the Border’ campaign were very offensive.” -- mitu

Hertzberg, Horvath vie for LA County board seat

The District 3 seat covers a majority of the San Fernando Valley, stretching from Westlake Village and Malibu to Calabasas, West Hills, Porter Ranch, San Fernando, Panorama City and Northridge, while also stretching to West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. The district’s boundaries changed dramatically during the county’s most recent redistricting effort, giving it a larger swath of the Valley. The move that drew the ire of some observers — including outgoing Supervisor Sheila Kuehl — who felt the change gave Hertzberg an edge in the election, given his longtime representation of the area in Sacramento. -- Hey SoCal

Student Wellness Unbounded: Recreation and Wellness Taking New Forms

California State University Northridge (CSUN) is creating a new Basic Needs Suite on its campus. In 2019, CSUN conducted a food security survey and found 48% of their students had low or very low food security. However, many students hadn’t used the campus food pantry due to barriers of stigma, lack of information, etc. The revitalization of the CSUN student union created an exciting opportunity to resolve these issues in the form of the Basic Needs Suite which not only provides students with the resources they need, but does so with an imbued sense of care and dignity. -- Campus Rec Magazine
