Decolonize Hispanic Heritage Month or Get Rid of It

“We have leaders who want to use the people because almost 70 percent of this population is of Mexican heritage, yet you never hear the word Mexican,” said Rudy Acuña, historian and Professor Emeritus of Chicano Studies at California State University, Northridge. “Independence has become a Hispanic holiday when we fought against the Spaniards. This [Hispanic Heritage Month] is full of contradictions.” -- telesur

Dressing neatly makes you smarter

-- Quote Magazine - Holland (in Dutch)

"What does it mean to be Chicano?": International film festival pushes for Latinx inclusion in Hollywood

At the panel entitled "The Rise of the Chicano Voice in Los Angeles," participants discussed the changing environment that aspiring Chicana/o film makers find themselves in, along with the power of the Mexican-American community not only in the industry around Hollywood, but in movements for social change. Panelist Guillermo Aviles-Rodriguez, a lecturer in the Chicana/o Studies Department at California State University, Northridge and Ph.D. student in UCLA's School of Theatre, Film and Television, stated that there has been a "demographic explosion" of the Latino people and that there needs to be an embracing of power by the community. "This type of event [ChIFF] is an amazing way to affect change," Aviles-Rodriguez went on to say. "Hollywood will pay attention. Latinos go to see these movies. That's a lot of power." -- People's World

Opinion: David Who?

What of note has Duke done since 1991? A story from 1996 is typical. A measure called the California Civil Rights initiative, banning racial preferences by the state, was on the November ballot. In September, as CCRI sponsor Ward Connerly wrote in a contemporaneous Wall Street Journal op-ed, anti-CCRI students at California State University, Northridge, organized “a ‘debate’ on affirmative action” with Duke “representing the anti-affirmative action side.” (Disclosure: This columnist has a history with one of the key figures in that controversy, which we recounted at length in a 2013 column.) -- The Wall Street Journal

Wilshire Grand architect Christopher Martin on the dangers of NIMBYism

So many different things. Right now, AC Martin is busy with some educational work. We finished the Hall of Justice about a year ago, which was a very interesting, adaptive reuse project. We have a number of housing projects in DTLA. We just started a couple of new educational projects, one for the master plan of Cal State Northridge. - The Real Deal

Enberg is rounding third and heading home after a glorious career

He is an accidental broadcaster. He needed money as a student at Central Michigan University, so he took a job as a janitor at a radio station. The general manager heard Enberg's voice and put him on the air, but Enberg earned his doctorate in health sciences and pursued a career in education. San Fernando Valley State College — now Cal State Northridge — hired him as a professor and assistant baseball coach in 1961. -- Waterloo Chronicle - Canada
