Metro Offers Local Students Discounted Fares

San Fernando Valley taxpayers haunted by ghost trains and invisible buses: Susan Shelley

It’s another example of the bait-and-switch that has been pulled on taxpayers over and over again. After three half-cent sales tax increases for transit since 1980, it can take an hour to catch a north-south bus in the Valley and we have invisible double-articulated buses on the Orange Line. Equally invisible: transportation improvements to serve the campus community at CSUN. For years, Metro wouldn’t even align its bus schedule with the university’s night classes. -- Los Angeles Daily News

Spock: Half-Vulcan. Half-Human. All Outsider Role Model.

In the “Biracial and Multiracial Identity” class she teaches at California State University, Northridge, Teresa Williams-León, a professor of Asian-American studies, includes the stories of Spock; Barack Obama (a self-avowed Spock fan); and Tabitha, the half-mortal daughter on “Bewitched.” For Ms. Williams-León, there’s something telling about Spock’s need to choose one of his selves over the other, rather than integrating the two. “He had to subdue his emotional side to become more cerebral and logical,” she said. “So that’s problematic. But it’s an interesting way of looking at how biracial people have had to suppress aspects of themselves, or one part of themselves.” -- The New York Times

Why Runners Seeking the Ideal Cross-training Sport Should Try Swimming

As a matter of fact, when researchers at California State University Northridge campus compared cool-down statistics between pool and treadmill runners, there was no difference in the aerobic capacity values (VO2) measured in both groups, so your body benefits equally. -- Run Society

Strong Suit: Dress for Success has been outfitting disadvantaged women for nearly two decades. Can clothes really open up a whole world?

Research has shown clothing has the ability to affect the wearer's own mood and behavior too. In his most recent study published in the Social Psychological and Personality Science Journal, Abraham Rutchick, an associate professor of psychology at California State University, Northridge, found that people who wore formal clothing performed tasks more efficiently and demonstrated the capacity for clearer, big-picture thinking. -- racked
