Big West Fights Roadblocks To Live Up To History

“The recruiting has gotten a lot harder, because so many of these kids, their first choice is always going to be a Power Five school,” said Cal State Northridge coach Dave Serrano, who also led UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton to Omaha in his career. “In fact, I had a conversation with (a current coach), this is even before I got back in the league, and he made a comment to me that it has gotten a lot harder. I was out of the league for about seven years and he said that recruiting has gotten a lot harder due to the fact that so many kids want to bypass the Big West and go to a Power Five conference.” -- Baseball America

CONFERENCE NOMINEES FOR 2020 NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Among the aquatic athlete nominees are also two water polo players. Victoria Wilson, a 2020 Big West Scholar Athlete of the Year, finished first on the Cal State University Northridge team with 32 goals and 35 steals. Tara Prentice, also a 2020 Big West Scholar Athlete of the Year honoree, who led the University of California, Irvine water polo team with 57 goals in the shortened 2020 season. -- SwimSwam

Former Elkhart Central basketball standout Makaya Porter now at Marian

Marian finished 22-6 overall and 9-3 in the NIC last season. The Knights won their third straight Class 3A sectional title and the third in program history before losing to eventual state champion NorthWood in the Jimtown Regional. Marian is slated to return two standouts in sophomore Nevaeh Foster, who averaged 19.1 points per game last season, along with senior McKenzie Hudgen. Hudgen averaged 12.8 points per game and has committed to Division I program Cal State Northridge. -- South Bend Tribune
