Reading though Phonics involves a symbol system of a symbol system.

I have encountered many non readers in junior high who have poor (no) sound blending capabilities.

Because phonics operates as a double symbol system, it is a particularly complicated cognitive process.

Generally, it is not overburdening for most children, who by natures gift, have endowed skills for language processing.

But for children with a history language delay, learning to read can be a problem.

Often the evidences of the language delay have past (i.e., poor vocabulary, and faulty syntax and sound pronunciation).

But the language processing problems persist and are still evident in a resistive lack of progress in developing reading skills.

The third reading approach is The Writing Road to Reading. It utilizes all three modalities: Visual, Auditory and Haptic.
