Chapter 12 Reading Practice

From the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle entry for 893:

þa hie þa fela wucena sæton on twa healfe þære, 7 se cyng wæs west on Defnum wiþ þone sciphere, þa wæron hie mid metelieste gewægde, 7 hæfdon miclne dæl þara horsa freten. 7 þa oþre wæron hungre acwolen. þa eodon hie ut to þæm monnum þe on easthealfe þære wicodon, 7 him wiþ gefuhton, 7 þa Cristnan hæfdon sige.

When they had sat on both sides of that [of the river] for many weeks, the king was in the west [fighting] against the pirate-army, they suffered foodless and had eaten the greater portion of their horses, and others died from hunger. Then they went out to the men camping on the east side, and fought against them, and the Christians had the victory.
