EXTERNSHIPS


After a graduate student has completed three pediatric clinics, he/she enrolls for 672A and 672B.  These courses are the Adult Externships. At these site/s, the students attain the 80 adult clinical hours required by ASHA.   Most of these placements are made in hospitals, nursing homes and clinics. The sites must sign an affiliation agreement with the university before students are placed.  The supervisor at the site must hold ASHA CCC in Speech Pathology and must be a current member of ASHA.  The student must be supervised 50% of the time for diagnostics and 25% of the time for treatment. The sequence is as follows:

1)      Graduate student completes three pediatric clinics

2)      Graduate student completes prerequisite coursework

3)      Graduate student meets affiliation agreement requirements

4)      Graduate student interviews with site arranged by externship coordinator

5)      Graduate student and site supervisor agree on an externship schedule.

6)      Graduate student meets site requirements for externship

7)      Evaluation is done by the supervisor and mailed to university

8)      Hours are signed by the supervisor
