Notification of Revised CSU Policy on Travel to Banned States: Senate Bill 447

September 14, 2023

Good afternoon, Principal Investigators and Research Administrators:

Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill (SB) 447 yesterday which repeals Assembly Bill (AB) 1887, California’s restriction on taxpayer-funded travel by state agencies and departments to states that have adopted discriminatory anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

Per guidance from the CSU Chancellor’s Office and CSUN, form to request for approval of travel to prohibited states under AB1887 will no longer be required. Please note that travel approval will still be required for the following per TUC travel guidelines:

  • The traveler is a CSUN employee. A CSUN employee is an individual with a state-side/CSUN appointment.
  • If the grant requires pre-approval of travel, or travel is not budgeted in your project. Please check with your Post-Award Analyst (liaison) if you have any questions.
