Faculty Compensation and Additional Pay FAQ

Per the Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and the CSU Systemwide Additional Employment Policy (HR 2002-05), the limit of total workload is 125% (25% overage of full-time base).

Information regarding Faculty Additional Employment can be found in the Office of Faculty Affairs website and TUC Post-Award website

Please note that the system involves a two-step process:

  • Pre-authorization to reserve your time prior to working on a specific fund or project. Pre-authorization must be submitted prior to the end of the term. Once the term ends and closes, faculty will no longer be able to submit additional pay requests.
  • Payment authorization to submit and certify that actual work has been completed for the fund or project.

Below are frequently asked questions regarding TUC faculty additional pay. Questions related to CSU policy on additional pay, please reach out to additional.pay@csun.edu. Please reach out to your Post-Award liaison if you have specific questions on faculty pay related to the grant.

I am a CSUN Faculty. How do I get paid in my sponsored project?

CSUN uses an automated Additional Pay System which was implemented on August 1, 2016. In TUC additional pay system, it enables campus to track additional employment across all areas (State, TUC, and ExL) for each faculty.

As stated, Additional Pay system involves two steps:

  • Pre-authorization to reserve your time prior to working on a specific fund or project. Pre-authorization must be submitted prior to the end of the term. Once the term ends and closes, faculty will no longer be able to submit additional pay requests.
  • Payment authorization to submit and certify that actual work has been completed for the fund or project.

Please see guides and training videos below that show how to submit requests in the system:

How do you calculate daily rate in the system?

CSUN faculty annual compensation is taken from CSUN CHRS. To calculate the daily rate in TUC Additional Pay system, divide the annual compensation by 170 (85 work days in fall and 85 work days from spring). Because the calculation is hard coded, same calculation is applied to lecturers and part-time faculty. The automated system calculates the number of available days based on the employee's appointment and time base.

Do we pay CSUN staff through the TUC Additional Pay System?

No. We use TUC Additional Pay System only for CSUN faculty even if CSUN staff can submit Additional Pay Request in the system. TUC process to hire CSUN staff is the same as hiring a TUC staff. One of the reasons why they are hired as a staff is because there are a few CSUN staff that have second appointments that are not the same as their (main) state appointment.

To hire CSUN staff to your grant, complete and submit Action Request form and Background Verification form under TUC HR Forms page, under Manager Hiring. An individual cannot start working until the sign-in process with TUC HR is completed. Once the CSUN staff signs-in with TUC HR, the individual may now work in the project and will enter their hours in TUC eTime system. Pay days and eTime due dates can be found in the TUC Payroll web page

I am an Academic Year Faculty, how many days do I have available each term?

TUC Additional Pay System will indicate how many available days each employee has. The Additional Pay System will show the following time base in the system for AY faculty:

  • Fall - 25% overload
  • Winter - 125%
  • Spring - 25% overload
  • Spring break - 125%
  • Summer - 125%

Federal projects limit the senior personnel pay charged to the grant up to faculty's base pay, meaning only up to 100%. Hence, there is a faculty additional pay cap on available days to be charged in federal projects during winter, spring break, and summer. Email reminders are sent to PIs regarding available days. These emails can be found in the Announcement page

When do I get paid in my sponsored project?

If you have submitted your pre-authorization and payment authorization, then your payment is coming soon! If not, please read the answer to the first question, "I am a CSUN Faculty. How do I get paid in my sponsored project?"

If the payment authorization request is currently in 7-TUC Payroll status, that means your request will be paid in the next payroll run. All payment authorization must be in 7-TUC Payroll status by 10AM on payroll due date (see payroll schedule here) for it to be processed on the upcoming pay day.

Where can I find how many available days I have left in the term?

The pre-authorization page will indicate how many days available left for the employee to enter

Please note that TUC will also check award and CSU guidelines on the maximum amount of payment allowed for faculty.
