Context Matters

Adolescents' Adjustment

  • Examining how society, community, school climate, family dynamics, and peers relate to the academic achievement and mental health of adolescents (e.g., Latinos, African Americans, Armenians, Iranians, and/or immigrant families) using self-report survey data, census data, and school-record data.
  • Examining how fathers' reports and adolescents' reports relate to outcomes in Latino and African American adolescents from California, North Carolina, and Oklahoma

Emerging Adults' Adjustment

  • Using using self-report survey data to examine how society, family, and peers influence mental health, emotion regulation, and self-efficacy in emerging adults in various samples (e.g., different ethnic groups, sexual orientations, Deaf people).
  • Examining how parents transmit values about finances in Chinese American, Iranian American, and Mexican American families using one-on-one interviews.

Health Inequity

  • Examining perceived barriers and challenges to mental health services in Latino samples using focus groups and survey data.

Achievement Gap

  • Examining how achievement gaps in university students arise from perceived barriers and challenges using focus groups and survey data.
