Changes in Travel Guidelines effective July 1, 2022: Mileage reimbursement and Additional Banned States to AB1887

July 5, 2022

Dear Principal Investigators and Research Administrators:

Please note that there are two changes in the travel guidelines effective July 1, 2022. Below are the changes:

Increase in Mileage Reimbursement as of July 1, 2022

The California State University standard mileage rate for business travel occurring on or after July 1, 2022 will increase from 58.5 cents per mile to 62.5 cents per mile. Meal reimbursement and incidental allowance amounts remain unchanged. Please utilize the travel guidelines when preparing your travel authorization requests and expense reports on TUC eTravel system.

New Travel Restrictions – AB1887 (Traveling to Banned States)

The California Attorney General’s Office has updated the list of states where state-funded and state-sponsored travel may not be used for travel per California Assembly Bill (AB) No. 1887.

Below is the updated list of states with a Travel Ban in Effect:

  1. Alabama
  2. Arizona – effective September 28, 2022
  3. Arkansas
  4. Florida
  5. Idaho
  6. Indiana – effective July 1, 2022
  7. Iowa
  8. Kansas

What does this mean for your sponsored project travel?

Though this applies only to travel funded by the State of California, travelers going to any banned state will still need to complete Request for Approval of Travel to Prohibited States Under Assembly Bill 1887 form to get an exemption. The form approved by the Provost Office must be attached to your travel authorization (if required) or expense report to be allowed for reimbursement.

Current travel and reimbursement guidelines are posted on this link.
