CITI Research Training Courses
CSUN Research and Sponsored Programs has a number of training programs available to our research community. Some trainings are required for compliance purposes. Others are offered to help our research community gain a deeper knowledge in research and grants. If you have questions about specific trainings, please contact your Grants Analyst or IRB Staff.
Instructions for accessing CITI Training Courses
The courses are delivered online through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program. Select “register” and then type California State University Northridge under the “select your organization affiliation” option. Use your CSUN email as the primary address.
Once registered on the website, please select and complete the required courses. CITI will provide confirmation of your successful completion of the course directly to Research and Sponsored Programs.
Trainings marked * are required for members of oversight committees and for administrative staff.
Essentials of Grant Proposal Development - All faculty seeking funding are encouraged to complete the Essentials of Grant Proposal Development module as it will provide insight and a foundation to the proposal submission process.
Human Subjects Research – Training (a) or (b) is required for all researchers doing work involving human participants. This includes student research assistants and collaborators at other institutions.

Laboratory Animal Research – Training (a) is required for all faculty, staff and researchers doing work involving animals; this includes field work projects and the use of animals in coursework as well as laboratory research. Training (b) is required for research involving mice or rats.

Conflicts of Interest - Each Investigator awarded a research or sponsored project must complete training on this policy prior to accepting and engaging in project activities, the Investigator’s responsibilities regarding disclosure prior to engaging in research, and at least every four (4) years thereafter. An investigator is defined as any project personnel that will be responsible for the design, conduct, or reporting.
Responsible Conduct of Research – Training must be completed under the following circumstances:
Projects Funded by NSF
All undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers supported by NSF funding, on a part-time or full-time basis, are required to complete RCR training. Training must be completed no more than ninety (90) days after a student, or postdoctoral researcher is hired to work on the project, and at least every four (4) years thereafter for the duration of the project.
Projects Funded by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), U.S. Department of Agriculture
All program directors, faculty, undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and any staff participating in a NIFA-funded research project are required to complete RCR training. Principal Investigators and project directors must complete the training within 90 days after acceptance of funding. Any others (students/staff/postdocs/etc.) must complete the training within 90 days after they first participate in the research. A refresher course is required at least every 4 years thereafter for the duration of the project.
Select NIH projects per solicitation/award guidelines
Live training is required for all undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers supported by select NIH funding, on a part-time or full-time basis, are required to complete RCR training. Training must be completed no more than 90 days after a student, or postdoctoral researcher is hired to work on the project, and at least every 4 years thereafter for the duration of the project. The training plan must be provided to Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP). Since training will be live, the PI must provide appropriate evidence (agenda, sign-in-sheet, and/or certificates) to the Grants & Contracts Analyst. However, if the RCR management plan includes online CITI training, then students must complete training on the CITI website in addition to live training.

Export Controls – It is advised that all investigators that anticipate that work may involve:
- sending, transporting, transmitting, or carrying any material or equipment related to this project outside the US (examples include: GPS, biologicals, diagnostic kits, reagents)
- planned travel outside the US, or the involvement of foreign national faculty, staff, students, or collaborators, or the exchange of project information, equipment, or materials with foreign entities or individuals
- non-commercial encryption or information security software
- any equipment, technology, materials or software specifically designed, modified, or adapted (even slightly) for a military purpose or that may involve national security
- any classified materials, equipment, technology or data
Complete the introduction to export compliance and supplemental modules. Under certain circumstances, to mitigate risks related to export control, RSP may require an investigator to complete select export control modules.
