Master of Science in Kinesiology

The Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Northridge offers a graduate program, leading to the development of scholars, future leaders, and educators in Kinesiology. The graduate program includes academic as well as practical experiences in the student's chosen area of study within the field of Kinesiology. Applications are accepted for both Fall and Spring admissions.

The Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Northridge offers The Master of Science degree in Kinesiology. With faculty guidance, students can focus their studies in:

  • Exercise Physiology
  • Motor Behavior
  • Pedagogy in Physical Education
  • Sports and Performance Studies
  • Strength and Conditioning

* Students may select elective courses in one of the Kinesiology subdisciplines listed above to focus their studies, or may develop an individualized program including electives from more than one Kinesiology subdiscipline (in consultation with an advisor). The culminating experience may consist of a Thesis or Professional Project.

Mission

The mission of the Graduate Program in the Department of Kinesiology is: 1. To provide opportunities for advanced study in Kinesiology, leading to enhanced expertise in the student's area of professional endeavor and/or preparation for further graduate work. 2. To provide experience in planning and conducting a research or professional project.

Goals

The Goals of the Master’s Degree Program in Kinesiology are to: 1. Conduct research, and other scholarly and creative activity, to build and enhance the body of knowledge in Kinesiology. 2. Enhance the scholarly and professional development of our graduate students. 3. Enrich the research and other scholarly and creative efforts through mentoring and collaborative experiences with colleagues in the Department, College, and University. 4. Apply research, student projects, and other scholarly and creative activity in service to the community where appropriate.

Student Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the Master's Degree Program, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a comprehensive and theoretical understanding of Kinesiology through oral and written expression. 2. Synthesize and apply theoretical concepts from the Kinesiology research literature to the student's chosen area of study. 3. Conceptualize, plan and conduct a scholarly research or professional project based on a review of appropriate literature and utilizing appropriate methodologies.

The Department of Kinesiology Graduate program has a Canvas site that provides applicants with detailed information regarding the admission process, admissions requirements, and admissions deadlines. For those seeking Spring Semester admission, all application materials are due on or before October 1. Applicants for the Fall Semester must submit all materials on or before February 1.
