SUN Program

Welcome to our College of Education Self-care Initiative, informally called Self-care for U at Northridge, the SUN Program.

It is so wonderful that you are considering self-care as an important way to care for yourself and keep balance and health in your life. Self-care means taking responsibility for yourself to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and in your personal world through individually determined, proactive activities. You are at your best when you attend to yourself in equal measure to others in day-to-day living!

Self-care: How to take better care of yourself

 Resilience is the psychological quality that allows people to be knocked down by the adversities of life and come back at least as strong as before. This is easier said than done, and it is quite normal to have times when we experience the opposite of resilience, and instead feel exhausted and overwhelmed by ongoing challenges. When feeling like this, it is especially important to make self-care a priority. Self-care and forgiveness

One form of self-care practice that can be very healing is learning how to forgive others for the injustices that we have experienced. Forgiveness is a moral virtue like justice or patience or kindness that must be cultivated from continual practice.  According to Dr. Bob Enright, a professor in the College of Education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and founder of the International Forgiveness Institute, the following points are important to understand when engaging in forgiveness. Radical Self-care

The importance of engaging in radical self-care is critically important as we witness or directly experience racism, sexism, homophobia, audism, class, and other forms of oppression. Radical self-care involves deep reflective work that prioritizes our own inner peace and commitment to take care of ourselves first before attempting to take care of others. In a broader sense, radical self-care involves healing our hearts and souls (metaphorically) and our bodies in order to keep going. It’s about being intentional in our own care. Read more

Self-care and contemplative practice

Contemplative practices can cultivate tolerance and compassion and contribute to improvements in both individual health and societal wellbeing, according to numerous research articles. Examples of contemplative practice include meditation, mindfulness, yoga, and prayer. Deep contemplation of self, environment, and spirit can raise awareness of humans being connected to a greater whole of humanity. Dr. Ajit Pyati, an Associate Professor at the Western University of Ontario, states “My work (teaching, scholarship, and service) is guided by this overarching question: How can we live freer and more conscious lives, while also working to build a more just and humane world?” Read more
