It’s so important that we engage in wellbeing activities for ourselves and our community during this time of the pandemic. Research across the country indicates that many of us have been impacted by loss, isolation, and other challenges. 20% of people in the US have lost a family member or close friend to COVID, with even greater losses found in diverse communities. And according to recent surveys, 80% of students report moderate to severe anxiety since the onset of the pandemic. During a crisis, like the pandemic, the ability to learn and perform can be diminished as a result of the emotional complexity and social nature of learning. The CSUN Campus Care Recovery Plan provides programming and activities that will create space to process the pandemic’s socio-emotional impact and offer support for faculty, staff, students and the surrounding CSUN community. Programming includes comprehensive education and professional development, clinical services, research, toolkits, a central website with resources, and opportunities for meditation and stress reduction. The Michael D. Eisner College of Education, the Strength United Center, and the Mitchell Family Counseling Clinic are proud partners in offering services in this plan. At one of the first events, members of the CSUN campus and surrounding community attended a presentation by Laura van Dernoot Lipsky of the Trauma Stewardship Institute on the traumatic impact of COVID and what we can do to recover.
