Kellogg Foundation Awards CSUN Grant to Tackle California’s Teacher Shortage

CSUN has been awarded a three-year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for a teacher-preparation project aimed at increasing the number of men — particularly African-Americans, Asians and Latinos — who want to work in elementary education. CSUN elementary education professors Shartriya Collier-Stewart and David Kretschmer are leading the Future Minority Male Teachers of California Project, which will eventually involve five other CSU campuses in urban settings across the state. Wendy Murawski and David Kretschmer Talk on Teacher Tone

Exactly how a teacher’s tone of voice is being received by students is worth finding out, said Wendy Murawski, executive director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at California State University, Northridge. “There are teachers who are seen as far too critical or negative and they just don’t know it,” she said.
“I’ve known teachers who have been yellers and teachers who have been very, very soft-spoken,” said David Kretschmer, [professor of Elementary Education]. “Just as with the tone we use with anybody we’re conversing with – or the tone we use with a pet – it can have a powerful impact.”
