Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, held its Student 2016 Research Conference in Atlanta, Georgia this past November.
Our very own Sayuri Pacheco was selected as a winner for the Undergraduate Division in the Chemistry research category. This was her first time attending a professional conference. She speaks very positively about the experience with the various workshops about graduate school, how to be a better presenter, about research in general, and the networking opportunities to meet new professors and students in her field.
“My poster was about the synthesis of a set of compounds that I made in my lab they will be tested for their binding affinity to DNA. This is relevant because this is how pharmaceuticals can target specific gene sequences and thus be effective,” Sayuri explains, “at first I was intimidated but I was able to get out of my comfort zone and meet new people. It was great and felt encouraging to see research and education from a perspective different from my own.”
