Hill High School student wins NASA Armstrong scholarship
Divonte said his motivation to go to college began with his parents instilling in him the value of education and knowledge. As a kid, one of his hobbies was rock collecting. That interest grew into a career path, which he plans to begin with studying geological sciences this fall at California State University, Northridge. He is looking forward to guidance from his older brother, Damone Williams Jr., who also attends the university. --FinTech Zoom

Altany earned her master’s degree in vocal performance from Cal State Northridge while her husband Steve O’Conner, earned his master’s degree in music from Cal State Long Beach, later teaching there. Both now teach music lessons out of their home in the Wrigley district of Long Beach. She has been a guest vocal coach and choir consultant for the Walnut Valley Unified School District since 2014. --Press Telegram

“Hard Edged” featured an early work by Bey that she produced when she was still a graduate student at Cal State Northridge, where she received her master’s in fine arts in 2014. The piece, “Picky Head,” consisted of a wall covered in images of Black men and women wearing their hair in natural styles. Over this wallpaper, Bey used gallons of relaxer to spell out the words “PICKY HEAD” — Caribbean slang for someone with unkempt hair — in large white capital letters. The project was part of a series Bey did as a graduate student exploring the politics and aesthetics of Black hair and the natural hair movement at a time in which she herself was ditching the relaxers and growing out her natural hair. --The Los Angeles Times
