More than 400 toxic sites in California are at risk of flooding from sea level rise

A growing body of research is now investigating how rising water will flood communities built on or near contaminated land. Efforts to study this issue in the San Francisco Bay Area have become increasingly coordinated, and state toxic substances control officials have started their own mapping project. At Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Northridge, a team of researchers recently launched a project to examine which communities in the state could be most harmed by potential flooding of industrial chemicals currently stored underground. -- Times News Network

Kate Stover is the Staff Development & Curriculum Specialist for Visual, Performing, and Media Arts at the Tulare County Office of Education. Christina Clausen is the director of the Porterville Chamber of Commerce. Roger Perez is the Director of Communications and Community Relations at Porterville College. Jose Hernandez is a filmmaker, and graduate of Cal State University Northridge’s Film program. Lillian Dissi is a local artist, painter, and graphic design instructor. Commander Donald Graham, LAPD Officer With Heart

The twenty-year-old finally broke the tension by explaining that she was an 11-year-old girl whose single mother cleaned homes for a living and belonged to the Jr. Neighborhood Watch group that then-LAPD Senior Lead Officer Graham ran in an isolated community of Los Angeles. The lunch shift she worked now supported the young woman as she studied nursing at California State University at Northridge. Her major choice was inspired by a discussion on jobs led by Graham at one of the Jr. Watch meetings. Upon graduation, she benefited from the guidance of Amy, a Nursing Manager, in finding her first nursing position in a San Fernando Valley hospital. -- Positively Filipino
