Meet the Black Women Leading the Way for Plant-Based Foods

Sandy Enriquez says that while running with Olympic athletes at California State University, Northridge instilled in her the skills and focus needed to run a business. After founding three national organic vinegar brands in his career—including Bragg and Fleischmann’s—Enriquez is now president of Mother Earth Vinegar. The Southern California-based company’s products include: organic apple cider vinegar, red wine vinegar, white vinegar, and Keurig-compatible Superfood Tea Pods. Like Madsen, Enriquez says she hasn’t seen many women of color in the food industry. “When I started, most women were administrative assistants, payroll clerks and accounts receivable clerks,” she says. “There was no woman [in leadership roles], And there were no women of color,” Enriquez said. -- Business News

Album of the Week: Christopher Mallett, 'Justin Holland: Guitar Works and Arrangements'

Mallett, a Bay Area guitarist and educator most widely known as one-half of the celebrated Duo Noire, has devoted a great deal of time and effort to excavating Holland’s music and life story. Much of that legacy now resides either in the music division of the Library of Congress or at Cal State Northridge, in the form of solo song and dance arrangements. They form the basis of Mallett’s sensitive and impeccably played new album, Justin Holland (1819-1887): Guitar Works and Arrangements. -- WRTI
