Latino Book & Family Festival Coming to MiraCosta College

The college is hosting the festival as part of its extensive outreach to the community. MiraCosta College District Superintendent/President Dr. Sunita “Sunny” Cooke will be on hand to introduce guest speakers, including former U.S. Ambassador Dr. Julian Nava and Carlsbad native and bestselling author Victor Villasenor. Nava, a longtime history professor at Cal State Northridge, was the first Mexican-American to graduate from Harvard and he became the first Mexican-American to hold the position of U.S. Ambassador to Mexico when he was appointed to the post by President Jimmy Carter in 1980. Villasenor has published numerous books, including the national bestsellerRain of Gold and Pulitzer Prize-nominee, Lion Eyes. -- Times of San Diego

Shannon Freshwater Announced As Next Studio Artist-In-Residence Camera Obscura Art Lab, August – November 2017

More about the artist: Shannon Freshwater is an illustrator and fine artist who uses collage and assemblage as a way to appropriate and re-contextualize imagery and ideas. Shannon finds inspiration in the mysterious and unknown, as well as pop culture and various sub cultures. She grew up in the bizarre landscape of Las Vegas, studied painting and film in New Mexico, and lived in a collaborative art community in Seattle before moving to Southern California in 2005. Shannon is a graduate of Art Center College of Design, where she now teaches in the illustration department. She also teaches in the art department at California State University Northridge. Her illustrations have appeared on various book covers as well as The New York Times, Le Monde, Scientific American and others. She has exhibited her work across the US and her book covers are included in the permanent collection of AIGA in New York. -- Public Now
