Billiter: Rule breakers

In English lit, we read classics, Pulitzer Prize-winning fiction and the one novel that every English professor seems to covet dissecting: “Heart of Darkness.” Most people recognize Joseph Conrad’s book, which was made into the movie “Apocalypse Now” using a modern setting of the Vietnam War. I probably would have thought “Apocalypse Now” was a just a good war movie, if Professor Lesley Johnstone hadn’t told us the characters’ names and dialogue came straight from Conrad’s book, which is why I’ve never seen the movie. Johnstone was a tenured professor when I was in her class at California State University at Northridge (CSUN). She later became professor emeritus at CSUN, which is when I discovered she was the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in English literature from Cambridge University in 1962. It makes sense. I learned about deconstructing a novel from her. And in turn, how to write one. -- Casper Star Tribune - WY
