Column: Why the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos movie is both pandering and pernicious

I don’t doubt Longoria’s sincerity about bringing nuanced Latino stories to the big and small screen. She has produced documentaries about farmworker exploitation and is starring in a CNN travel show about Mexico. In interviews, the Texas native has frequently cited “Occupied America,” a foundational text of Chicano Studies by Cal State Northridge legend Rudy Acuña that she read while obtaining a master’s degree in the subject at the university. -- Los Angeles Times

Connor Essegian from Wisconsin Badgers called to represent Armenian National Basketball Team

Essegian will be making his debut for Armenia in the “Armenian Basketball Classic,” an event that will take place June 16-17 and have Armenia facing France – ranked No. 5 globally – in back-to-back games. Both games will be played in California at Premier America Credit Union Arena on the campus of California State University, Northridge. It will mark the first-ever Armenian basketball games to be played in the United States. -- Public Radio of Armenia

Hart’s Douphner named All-American

Douphner will now join the CSUN men’s volleyball team alongside Hart teammate Hank Kaufman. The All-American will transition to his natural position of setter in college. Opposing teams will be in for a big surprise if they let the Matador setter get an open swing on the net. -- Santa Clarita Valley Signal

Eva Longoria Brings Latino Life to the Screen

Around that time, Longoria enrolled in night classes at California State University, Northridge, where she earned a master’s in Chicano studies. If she was going to chart a path for her own people, she first needed to learn where they had come from. Works of history, such as “Occupied America,” by Rodolfo Acuña, allowed Longoria to contextualize the Mexican American experience and fully appreciate its trajectory. In front of and behind the screen, the gap between the community’s role and its representation continued to widen. Although Latinos had become the largest minority group in the country, they made up less than five per cent of hires as characters in film. It was clear to Longoria that producers and executives had unconsciously ignored the community for years; if she were to change that, she needed to join their ranks. -- The New Yorker

In telling the story of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, Eva Longoria reveals her superpower

Longoria, who was born to Mexican parents in Corpus Christi, Texas, is best known for her breakout role on the television series “Desperate Housewives,” but she has supported Latino causes and projects throughout her career. She has a master’s degree in Chicano Studies from Cal State Northridge (she also has a bachelor’s of science in kinesiology from Texas A&M University-Kingsville), and has spoken at the past three Democratic National Conventions about immigration and other issues. -- San Francisco Chronicle
