A housing effort to keep a new generation of L.A. youth out of homelessness

During his most recent resident assistant job at Cal State Northridge, Prater offered food as an incentive for students to attend dorm meetings. To his surprise, some students stuffed days’ worth of food into Tupperware that they lugged back to their rooms. Other students would tell him they were taking time off to get their finances together but never returned. -- Los Angeles Times

California Adopts Controversial Math Instruction Framework

Brown is confident this could be done. Conrad is skeptical, noting the framework drafters have had three years to come up with an alternative and haven't. Mathematics professor Katherine Stevenson, the director of developmental mathematics at CSU Northridge, finds herself in between: It won't be possible to pare down a course sequence without first looking at the 2013 Common Core math standards through the lens of what standards students will need in 2030, and then redesign a course sequence based on those standards. -- The San Francisco Standard

Printmaker Dave Lefner Honors Classic Neon Signs from His Downtown LA Live-In Studio

Lefner is a born and bred Angeleno, growing up in the San Fernando Valley and attending Cal State Northridge. After relocating to the LACMA area, he found himself on an open studios art walk of the Brewery Artist Lofts downtown, and immediately fell in love. “I was like, I gotta live here!” he told me while generously giving me a personal tour of the very studio in which he would end up setting up shop. As fate would have it, Lefner only had to wait about a month after applying to move in, and almost three decades later, he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. “It’s like nothing else,” he said. “It’s a dream for an artist, or any creative type. And it’s amazing how hidden it is. We clocked 13,000 people at the last art walk between the two days, and still, so many people don’t know that there are 310 lofts here. They say it’s one of the world’s largest artist communities.” -- Print Magazine

The Los Angeles native was named to the All-Big West Second Team in 2022 and 2023. -- Jerusalem Post
