Caves prove that Neanderthals were cannibals

Now an international team led by Helene Rougier, an anthropologist at California State University Northridge in the United States, has proved from the bones found at Goyet that the Neanderthals there were cannibals.

-- marco (French)

Platinum-lead nanoparticles strain to become fuel cell catalysts

Now, scientists from the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory and California State University-Northridge, together with scientists from Soochow University, Peking University and Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics in China, have developed just such improved catalysts. These catalysts are able to undergo 50,000 voltage cycles with a negligible decay in their catalytic activity and no apparent changes in their structure or elemental composition. As reported in a paper in Science, the catalysts comprise ‘nanoplates’ made from an atomically-ordered Pt and lead (Pb) core surrounded by a thick uniform shell of four Pt layers. -- materialstoday

JBL at 70: This Northridge operation still knows how to throw sound

One room looks like something in a typical home, for blind studies on whether JBL’s or a competitor’s speaker sounds better. A huge “arena testing room” allows technicians to monitor how a sound system like the one at Staples Center, Dodger Stadium or the Cal State Northridge Performing Arts Center will work. -- LA Times

A dream amid uncertainty

Alvaro Castillo, 23, a Cal State Northridge student, and his cousin, Robert Castillo, 23, a student at Santa Ana College, will visit their grandmother in Nayarit. Alvaro Castillo, on his second trip to Mexico, said he hopes to absorb more this time around. -- The Orange County Register

Scientists Boost Catalytic Activity for Key Chemical Reaction in Fuel Cells

Now, scientists from a U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, California State University–Northridge, Soochow University, Peking University, and Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics have grown catalysts that can bear 50,000 voltage cycles with a immaterial spoil in their catalytic activity and no apparent changes in their structure or component composition. As described in a paper published in a Dec 16 emanate of Science, a catalysts are “nanoplates” that enclose an atomically systematic Pt and lead (Pb) core surrounded by a thick uniform bombard of 4 Pt layers. -- Latest Technology
