Aurelio de la Vega nació en La Habana el 28 de noviembre del año 1925. Luego de estudiar con el distinguido compositor austríaco Ernst Toch en California, desempeñó las más importantes responsabilidades docentes y artísticas en la prominente República cubana que terminó en 1959. Pero nada lo pudo amilanar y ese mismo año se estableció en Los Ángeles, que ha hecho su segunda patria hasta el presente, animado de un fervor intelectual incomparable desde su magisterio en California State University, en Northridge. Actualmente es Profesor Emérito de dicho alto centro de estudios, donde fue profesor de música y director del Estudio de Música Electrónica, entre los años 1959 y 1992. -- Diario Las Americas (in Spanish)

An Art Supplies Store in Reseda Is Closing After 57 Years, and the Valley Is Mourning

Local schools have long been supporters of Continental Art Supplies. Students have come here from institutions including Sherman Oaks CES, Birmingham and Cleveland high schools, Pierce College and Cal State Northridge. Aufhauser has worked with educators to help prepare their class supply lists. But Continental also counts fine artists among its clients. Several were in attendance on Wednesday, along with a few toy industry artists getting odds and ends for work. Animation artists come here and leave behind work to hang in the store. "It has to constantly be replaced because people rip it off all the time," Aufhauser says. -- LA Weekly

Recently, the group completed trail and restoration work in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and Channel Islands National Park. The group was also to work at La Plaza de Culturas y Artes, a cultural museum in downtown Los Angeles from July 27-28; in the new garden at Garfield High School, a product of a SAMO Youth alumnus on July 29; at the Ventura Hillsides Conservancy on Aug. 1; and on the campus of California State University, Northridge on Aug. 5. -- Malibu Surfside News
