SMU becomes the latest school to cancel its women’s basketball season
The Ivy League opted out of winter sports competition Nov. 12. On the same day, Cal State Northridge announced the cancellation of its season after six players withdrew citing covid-19 concerns and another could not enter the country in time for preseason camp due to travel constraints. Historically Black universities Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M and Maryland-Eastern Shore also canceled their seasons before they began. -- Washington Post
Alexander: College basketball season is already a mess
No other conferences have called it a day this season, but a growing number of individual programs have. The most prominent is Duke’s women’s program, which announced on Christmas Day it was canceling the remainder of its schedule after just four games at the behest of the athletes. Closer to home, Cal State Northridge’s women’s team shut it down in mid-November after six of its 13 players opted out of the season and another was unable to enter the country because of COVID-19 restrictions. -- Orange County Register
